Step-by-step: beadboard wainscoting

  1. Plan the height and layout. Choose a top-rail height, commonly 32 to 36 inches, and snap a level line around the room at that height. Plan panel seams to fall on studs and avoid awkward slivers at corners.
  2. Prep and seal the board. Prime all faces and edges of the beadboard before installing, especially in a bathroom, so moisture cannot swell raw edges later.
  3. Remove base trim and mark studs. Pry off the existing baseboard, find and mark the studs, and turn off power to any outlets you will cut around.
  4. Cut around outlets and pipes. Measure and transfer outlet and pipe locations to the panels, cut with a jigsaw or oscillating tool, and test-fit. Add outlet box extenders so receptacles reach the new surface, as code requires.
  5. Glue and nail the panels. Apply panel adhesive to the back, press the beadboard to the wall aligned to your level line, and pin it with a brad nailer into the studs and along the top and bottom edges.
  6. Handle corners. Cope or miter inside and outside corners, or use corner trim, so the beadboard turns cleanly.
  7. Add the top rail and base. Nail a top rail or chair-rail cap over the panel top and reinstall or replace the baseboard at the bottom, covering the panel edges and nail lines.
  8. Caulk, fill and paint. Fill nail holes, caulk every seam and the top and bottom edges, and finish with a moisture-resistant bathroom paint over the whole assembly.

How high should bathroom wainscoting be?

The classic wainscoting height is about one-third of the wall, which in an 8-foot bathroom puts the top rail around 32 to 36 inches off the floor, a natural chair-rail height. Taller wainscoting at 48 to 54 inches reads more traditional and offers more wall protection, and full height to about 60 inches works behind a vanity or in a powder room. Match the height to fixtures where you can, aligning the top rail with the top of the vanity backsplash or a windowsill for a tidy look. The one-third rule is the safe default that looks right in most bathrooms.

Can you put beadboard wainscoting in a bathroom with moisture?

Yes, but choose moisture-tolerant materials and seal everything. Use PVC beadboard or an MDF or plywood beadboard rated for damp areas rather than raw MDF, which swells if it gets wet. Prime all faces and edges before installing, caulk every seam and the top and bottom edges, and paint with a moisture-resistant bathroom paint. Keep the wainscoting outside the direct shower splash zone; it is wall paneling, not shower surround. In a well-ventilated bathroom with sealed, painted moisture-rated board, beadboard holds up well. In a chronically damp, unventilated room, even good board struggles.

Do you install wainscoting over drywall or remove it first?

You install it right over existing drywall in almost every case, which is one of wainscoting's advantages: the panels and trim hide the drywall and any minor imperfections. Locate the studs, glue and nail the beadboard to the wall, and cap it with a top rail and base trim. You only remove drywall if it is water-damaged and soft, in which case fix the moisture source and replace that drywall first. Installing over sound drywall also means you can usually reuse the existing baseboard or replace it as part of the trim package.

How do you cut beadboard around an outlet or pipe?

Measure the outlet or pipe location carefully from a fixed reference and transfer those measurements to the panel. For an outlet, mark the box outline and cut it with a jigsaw or an oscillating multi-tool, then use an outlet box extender so the receptacle sits flush with the new thicker surface, which is required by code when you build the wall out. For a pipe, drill a hole slightly larger than the pipe or cut a slot from the edge. Test-fit before gluing. An outlet box extender is not optional; the receptacle must reach the new surface.

Should you glue or nail wainscoting, or both?

Both. Run panel adhesive on the back of the beadboard to bond it flat to the wall and kill any drum or movement, then pin it with a brad nailer into the studs and along the top and bottom where the trim will cover the holes. Adhesive alone can let panels bow before it cures; nails alone can leave the thin board drumming between studs. The combination holds the panel flat and secure immediately. Fill the nail holes, caulk the seams, and the fasteners disappear under paint. This glue-and-nail method is standard for beadboard and paneling.
