Tumble dry a mattress protector on low heat or air-fluff for 30 to 60 minutes with two or three dryer balls, and take it out while the face fabric is still slightly damp. Never use a hot or normal cycle. The waterproof layer is a polyurethane or TPU film a few thousandths of an inch thick, laminated to the fabric, and high dryer heat softens it enough to crack and peel away — which is permanent and is the most common reason a protector starts leaking after a year. Air drying works too and takes 4 to 24 hours depending on thickness and humidity.

Why Heat Is the Whole Problem
A waterproof protector is a laminate: a soft face fabric bonded to a thin waterproof film. TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the better material and PU is the cheaper one, and both are thermoplastics — meaning they soften as they heat and change shape permanently.
A dryer on a hot setting runs well above the temperature these films tolerate in a repeated cycle. What happens is not dramatic in one wash: the film softens, the adhesive bond loosens slightly, and the film re-sets with micro-cracks. Repeat that ten times and the protector fails a spot test. That is why owners often report a protector working fine for a year and then leaking with no obvious event — the damage accumulated in the dryer.
The second heat vector is the elastic skirt. Hot cycles cook elastic, and a protector whose skirt has gone slack slides off the corners regardless of whether the membrane survived.

Machine Drying, Step by Step
- Shake out excess water and give the protector a snap by two corners. A slow final spin in the washer leaves less to dry without stressing the seams — high-speed spins put creases into the membrane.
- Load it alone or with one light item. A packed drum leaves damp patches in the quilting and stops the bundle from tumbling.
- Add two or three dryer balls. They keep the layers separated so air reaches both faces and stop quilted fill bunching into the corners. Clean tennis balls in socks work.
- Select low heat, or air-fluff if the tag says air dry only. Air-fluff tumbles without heat and takes about twice as long, which is fine.
- Run 30 minutes, then check. Feel the elastic skirt and the thickest quilted areas — those dry last. Restart in 15-minute increments rather than one long cycle.
- Stop while slightly damp. Pull it out when the face fabric feels barely cool-damp, then drape it over a rail or spread it on the bed for 30 to 60 minutes. Over-drying does the same heat damage as a hot cycle, just slower.
- Do not iron, do not dry clean, do not use dryer sheets. Dryer sheets leave a waxy film that blocks breathability and attacks the laminate bond.

Humidity changes these a lot. In a humid Gulf Coast summer, indoor air drying can stall entirely — a fan pointed at the protector, or a dehumidifier in the room, does more than extra hours.

Air Drying Properly
Air drying is the zero-risk option and it is what several manufacturers specify. Do it well:
- Hang over two lines or rails, not one, so both faces get airflow. A protector folded over a single line dries in a U shape with a permanently damp fold.
- Out of direct sun. UV degrades polyurethane and yellows white face fabrics. Shade with a breeze beats full sun with still air.
- Turn it once partway through, and reposition so the fold line moves.
- Indoors, add airflow. A box fan aimed at a drying rack cuts the time roughly in half.
- Never over a radiator or heat vent. Same heat damage as a dryer, applied unevenly.
The practical problem with air drying is that it takes the bed out of service for most of a day, which is a strong argument for owning two protectors if a child's bed is involved.
Getting It Dry Faster Without Heat
The constraint is that you cannot turn the heat up, so everything else has to work harder.
- Spin it twice. Running a second spin-only cycle in the washer removes more water than any amount of extra dryer time, and it costs about two minutes. Use a medium spin speed rather than the maximum, which creases the membrane.
- Roll it in a dry towel and press. Crude, effective on the quilted sections, and it takes 20 to 30 minutes off a tumble cycle.
- Dryer balls, always. Two or three keep layers separated so warm air reaches both faces instead of circulating around a folded lump.
- Dry it alone. Adding towels to speed things up does the opposite — they hold moisture and shed lint onto the backing.
- Point a box fan at it if you are air drying indoors. Airflow matters more than temperature for evaporation, and a fan roughly halves the drying time.
- Run a dehumidifier in the room in humid weather. In a Gulf Coast summer, indoor air drying can stall completely without one.
- Finish it on the bed. The last 10 percent dries fine spread flat over the mattress with the window open — just be certain the quilting and elastic are dry before sheets go back on.

Testing Whether the Waterproofing Survived
Thirty seconds, worth doing every six months and after any accidental hot cycle:
- Lay the protector flat over a dry towel or counter, face fabric up.
- Pour about a quarter cup of water onto the middle.
- Wait five minutes.
- Lift it and feel the surface underneath.
Dry underneath means the membrane is intact. Any dampness means it has failed and needs replacing — there is no coating you can reapply, because the waterproofing is the laminated film itself. Other end-of-life signs: visible separation of the backing, new stiff or crackly patches, a musty smell that survives two washes, or elastic that no longer grips.
The Five Drying Mistakes
- Normal or hot cycle, once. One hot cycle can be enough to craze the membrane. If it has already happened, run the spot test before assuming it survived.
- Dryer sheets. The waxy coating blocks breathability and attacks the laminate bond, and it is the reason some protectors start feeling clammy after a few months.
- Over-drying. Leaving it tumbling twenty minutes past dry applies the same heat damage more slowly. Stop it slightly damp.
- Drying it over a radiator or a heat vent. Concentrated heat on one area, which is worse than an even low tumble.
- Putting it back damp. Trapped moisture between a waterproof membrane and a mattress is the ideal condition for mildew, and the musty smell that results is usually permanent.
Ironing and dry cleaning are prohibited on essentially every waterproof protector for the same reason — heat and solvents both attack polyurethane. If a protector needs pressing, it is the wrong product for the bed.
