The short answer: to clean stainless steel, wipe it with the grain using warm water and a little dish soap or plain white vinegar on a microfiber cloth, then buff it dry immediately and, for a lasting shine, rub in a few drops of mineral or olive oil. Find the grain first
Stainless steel has a directional grain — fine parallel lines in the brushed finish, like wood. Cleaning across or against it drives residue into the grooves and leaves visible streaks, while cleaning along it lifts grime cleanly and buffs to an even shine. Before you start, look closely at the surface in good light to see which way the lines run; on most appliance doors the grain runs horizontally, but check, because panels can differ. Everyday cleaning with soap or vinegar
For daily fingerprints, splatter, and light grease, you do not need special products.
- Mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap, or fill a spray bottle with plain white vinegar. Both work; vinegar needs no rinse and excels at fingerprints.
- Dampen a microfiber cloth — never a paper towel, which lints, or an abrasive pad, which scratches.
- Wipe with the grain across the whole surface, applying gentle pressure on greasy spots.
- Rinse off soap with a second cloth dampened in clean water. Skip this step for vinegar.
- Buff dry immediately with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, again with the grain. This is the anti-streak step — never let it air dry.

Polish for a lasting shine
Cleaning removes grime; polishing restores the glow and helps repel the next round of fingerprints. After the surface is clean and dry, put a few drops of mineral oil, olive oil, or baby oil on a fresh microfiber cloth and rub it into the surface with the grain, then buff off the excess with a dry cloth. A thin film is all you want — too much attracts dust. The oil fills the microscopic grain lines, so light reflects evenly and prints wipe away more easily afterward. Deep-cleaning baked-on grease and grime

Dealing with rust and spots
Genuine stainless steel resists rust because chromium forms a self-healing oxide layer on the surface. When you see rust or orange spots, it is usually one of three things: contact with ordinary steel (like a can left on the surface) that transferred iron, a scratch from an abrasive pad that broke the protective layer, or iron in hard water spotting the surface rather than the steel corroding.
To remove surface rust, make a paste of baking soda and water, rub it gently along the grain with a soft cloth, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Avoid anything with chlorine or bleach, which corrodes the protective layer and makes rust worse. Keeping the surface dry after every clean prevents most spotting in the first place.
What never to use
The fastest way to ruin stainless steel is the wrong tool or chemical. Avoid all of these:
- Steel wool and abrasive scrub pads — they scratch and can embed iron that rusts.
- Bleach and chloride-based cleaners — they corrode the chromium layer and cause pitting.
- Abrasive powders — too harsh for the finish.
- Ammonia glass cleaners on appliances — they can streak and dull.
- Wiping against the grain — the leading cause of streaks.
- Letting it air dry — hard water leaves mineral spots.

Stainless steel cookware is different
Pots and pans take heat and food, so they tolerate treatments you would never use on an appliance. For burnt-on food, the classic fix is to add water and a little dish soap, bring it to a simmer to loosen the residue, then scrub — a nylon scrubber or, on a cooking surface, even a stainless scrubber is acceptable because the interior is not a show finish. For rainbow-colored heat tint (a harmless discoloration from high heat) and for white chalky spots from hard water, a little white vinegar or a specialized stainless cookware cleanser removes them. Match the method to the finish type

When you are unsure which you have, test any new product on a hidden corner first, and default to the gentlest method — mild soap, a soft cloth, and a dry buff.
