How we rank · full disclosure.
Test your water first: below 7 grains per gallon you almost certainly do not need a softener, between 7 and 10 gpg it is a judgment call, and above 10 gpg the case is strong. A $12 strip kit gives you the number in two minutes. Hardness — not house size, not water taste, not a door-to-door pitch — is the only input that matters, and roughly 85 percent of US homes have some degree of hard water, so "your water is hard" is a sales line rather than information.

What is your number?
Get a hardness reading before you get a quote. A strip kit dipped in cold water from an unsoftened tap gives you grains per gallon in about 15 seconds — how to test water hardness walks the whole process, including where to take the sample. If you are on a municipal supply, your utility's annual water quality report also states hardness, usually in ppm; divide by 17.1 to convert, since 1 gpg = 17.1 ppm.
| Grains per gallon | ppm | Do you need a softener? |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | 0–51 | No. Your water is soft |
| 3–7 | 51–120 | No. Occasional descaling covers it |
| 7–10 | 120–171 | Maybe — comfort and appliance life start to matter |
| 10–14 | 171–240 | Usually yes |
| 14–20 | 240–342 | Yes |
| 20+ | 342+ | Yes, and you already know it |

The symptoms that actually indicate hardness
Hardness has a specific signature, and it is worth checking whether what is bothering you is on the list — because several common water complaints have nothing to do with hardness at all.
These are hardness: white crusty deposits on faucets, showerheads and the kettle; glassware that comes out of the dishwasher spotted or cloudy; soap and shampoo that will not lather; a film on skin after showering; laundry that comes out stiff and grayish; a water heater that rumbles or fails sooner than expected; faucet cartridges that seize.
These are not hardness: a chlorine or swimming-pool taste, which is a filter problem; orange or brown staining, which is iron and manganese; a rotten-egg smell, which is hydrogen sulfide or a water heater anode rod; cloudy water that clears from the bottom up, which is dissolved air and completely harmless; grit in the aerators, which is sediment.
Installing a softener for any item on the second list will disappoint you. Water softener vs water filter maps each symptom to the machine that actually addresses it.

What it costs, in both directions
| Item | Typical figure |
|---|---|
| Softener unit | $500–$1,500 |
| Professional installation | $300–$1,000 depending on plumbing access |
| Salt | 30–80 lb a month, roughly $60–$150 a year |
| Regeneration water | 25–65 gallons per cycle |
| Resin bed life | 10–15 years on clean water, less with iron or chlorine |
| Expected unit life | 10–20 years with a serviceable control valve |
On the other side of the ledger: less soap and detergent, longer life from the water heater, dishwasher and washing machine, fewer seized faucet cartridges, and no descaling routine. The water heater is the biggest single item — scale insulates the heating surface, so the appliance works harder for the same output and fails earlier. Our appliance running cost calculator puts numbers on the running side, and the repair or replace calculator helps when a scaled heater starts to fail.
The realistic conclusion: at 20 gpg the appliance-life argument is genuinely strong. At 8 gpg you are largely buying comfort, and that is a legitimate reason — just be honest that it is the reason.
If the answer is no, or not yet
Descale on a schedule. Flush the water heater annually to clear sediment; how often should you flush a water heater covers the interval and the method. Descale kettles and coffee machines with citric acid. Soak showerheads in vinegar. On moderately hard water this genuinely keeps things working.
Choose fixtures that cope. Ceramic disc cartridges and spray heads with rubber nubs you can wipe clean handle hard water far better than the alternatives — see best kitchen faucet for hard water.
Consider a salt-free conditioner, understanding what it is. A TAC system will not soften anything and your hardness reading will not change, but it can meaningfully reduce scale bonding inside a water heater. If equipment protection is your entire objective — particularly for a tankless heater — that is a fair trade with no salt, no drain line and no wastewater. Best salt free water softener covers the category honestly.

Reasons a softener might be off the table
Three practical constraints, and any one of them can decide the question for you.
No drain. Salt-based softeners must discharge brine to a drain with an air gap. In some basements, condos and apartments that is genuinely impossible.
Local brine restrictions. A number of water-stressed municipalities, particularly in California, Texas and the Southwest, restrict or prohibit residential softener discharge because chloride is difficult to remove at the treatment plant. Check with your local water authority before buying anything.
Sodium. A softener adds roughly 8 mg of sodium per liter for each grain per gallon removed. Minor for most people, meaningful under a prescribed sodium limit — and solvable by leaving the kitchen cold tap unsoftened, running potassium chloride, or fitting reverse osmosis at the sink. Is softened water safe to drink works through it.
The honest bottom line
Measure first. If the number is under 7 gpg, spend the money on something else — a softener would be a solution without a problem. Between 7 and 10 gpg, decide on comfort: if spotted glassware and soap that will not lather genuinely irritate you, a softener will fix that, and if they do not, you can live happily without one. Above 10 gpg, and especially above 15, the appliance-life case is real and gets stronger every year you wait.
And whichever way you go, keep the two categories straight. A softener treats hardness and removes no contaminants; a filter removes contaminants and does nothing to hardness. Next steps: best water softener if the answer is yes, how much salt does a water softener use for the running cost, and best under sink water filter if what you actually wanted was better drinking water.
