That smell is hydrogen sulfide gas, and the fastest way to find the cause is to check whether it comes from the hot tap only. If it does, the culprit is almost certainly the sacrificial anode rod inside your water heater — the magnesium rod that protects the tank can reduce sulfates in the water into hydrogen sulfide. If cold water smells too, the gas is arriving with your water supply, which on a private well means sulfur bacteria or naturally sulfide-bearing groundwater. These are two entirely different problems with two entirely different fixes, and diagnosing which one you have takes about a minute.
The One-Minute Test That Tells You Which Problem You Have
Run the cold tap at the kitchen sink for a full minute and smell the water in a glass. Then run the hot tap for a minute and smell that. Do it at a second fixture — a bathroom sink — to rule out a single trap or aerator. What you find puts you in one of three categories, and the rest of this page follows from that.

That third case catches a surprising number of people. If the smell disappears when you fill a glass and carry it into another room, you were smelling the drain, not the water. If Only the Hot Water Smells: the Anode Rod
Every glass-lined steel water heater contains a sacrificial anode rod, usually magnesium. It is a deliberate piece of chemistry: the rod corrodes preferentially so the tank does not. The side effect is that magnesium is an aggressive reducing agent, and in water containing sulfate it can drive that sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. Penn State Extension puts it plainly: the magnesium rod fitted to inhibit corrosion of the heater can chemically reduce sulfates to form hydrogen sulfide, and replacing that rod with an aluminum one should eliminate the odor while maintaining corrosion protection.
Sulfur bacteria can also colonize the tank itself, particularly in a heater kept at a low temperature or one that sits unused for weeks — a vacation home is the classic case. The Minnesota Department of Health treats a heater that produces sulfide only in hot water as a distinct scenario from a contaminated well, and the remedies differ accordingly.
What actually fixes it

- Swap the anode rod for aluminum, aluminum-zinc, or a powered impressed-current anode. This is the definitive fix for the chemical cause. Aluminum-zinc rods are specifically marketed for odor problems.
- Do not remove the anode and leave it out. A bare steel tank rusts through quickly and most manufacturers void the warranty if the rod is absent. You are trading a smell for a flood.
- Raise the temperature temporarily if your manufacturer allows it. Sustained higher temperatures suppress sulfur bacteria in the tank. If All the Water Smells: It Is Coming From the Source
When cold water smells too, the hydrogen sulfide is dissolved in the water reaching your house. On a municipal supply this is uncommon and worth a call to your utility. On a private well it is the normal explanation, and there are two distinct mechanisms.
Sulfur bacteria live in oxygen-poor groundwater and in wells, plumbing and softeners, converting sulfate into hydrogen sulfide as part of their metabolism. Bacterial sulfide often fluctuates — worse after the system sits idle, better with heavy use.
Geological sulfide is simply what the aquifer contains. Sulfate minerals reacting with organic matter deep underground in anaerobic conditions produce hydrogen sulfide with no bacteria involved. This kind is steady rather than variable and does not respond to disinfection.
Telling them apart matters because it determines the treatment. Shock chlorination of a well knocks out bacterial sulfide, sometimes permanently, and does nothing for the geological kind.

Whole-House Treatment That Actually Works
Hydrogen sulfide is a dissolved gas, so it has to be oxidized into elemental sulfur and then filtered out. There is no cartridge that simply strains it away.

Why Is My Water Cloudy or Milky?
This is a different question with a much happier answer, and it comes up in the same breath often enough to belong here. Cloudy water is almost always dissolved air. Fill a clear glass and set it on the counter. If the cloudiness clears from the bottom upward within a couple of minutes, it was air — millions of tiny bubbles rising out of solution. Cold water holds more dissolved gas than warm water, so this is markedly more common in winter and right after a water main is worked on.
If instead the glass clears from the top downward, or leaves anything at the bottom, you have suspended solids rather than air. That points at a disturbed main, a well drawing sediment, corroding galvanized pipe, or a water heater shedding scale. Cloudy water that appears only at the hot tap, and only after the heater has been left alone for a while, is usually the tank's sediment layer being stirred up. Flush it.

Test Before You Buy Anything
Smell tells you a gas is present. It does not tell you the concentration, and it tells you nothing about what else is in the water. Before spending money on treatment, get numbers.

If you are on a private well, nobody is testing it but you. The Short Version
Smell the hot tap and the cold tap. Hot only means your water heater's magnesium anode rod is making the gas — flush the tank and fit an aluminum or powered anode, and never just remove the rod. Hot and cold means it is in your water: shock-chlorinate the well if the sulfide comes and goes, and look at an air-injection oxidizing filter if it is constant. One faucet only means you are smelling the drain. And if the water is merely cloudy rather than smelly, put a glass on the counter and watch which way it clears — bottom-up is air, and air is harmless.
