Adding attic insulation is a high-return weekend project — plan on a day, $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot in materials, and no permit for a straightforward top-up. It cuts heating and cooling bills by slowing heat loss through the roof. The order matters: air-seal the leaks first, keep soffit vents clear with baffles, then lay batts or blow in loose fill to the R-value your climate needs. Wear a respirator and step only on joists. It is DIY-friendly, but knob-and-tube wiring or moisture problems mean stopping to get a pro.

Tools and materials
- Unfaced fiberglass or mineral-wool batts, or blown loose-fill cellulose/fiberglass with a rented blower.
- Caulk and expanding foam for air-sealing, plus rafter baffles for the soffit vents.
- A respirator (N95+), goggles, gloves, long sleeves, and knee pads.
- A utility knife, tape measure, work light, and boards to kneel on across the joists.

Step 1: Assess and plan the R-value
Measure the existing insulation depth and note whether it sits below, level with, or above the joists. Look up your climate zone's target (roughly R-38 to R-60 depending on region) and calculate how much to add. Check for signs of moisture, mold, or pest activity, and note any recessed lights, wiring, and the location of soffit vents before you start.
Step 2: Air-seal the leaks
Before adding any insulation, seal the air paths: caulk around plumbing and wiring penetrations, foam larger gaps at top plates and chases, weatherstrip and insulate the attic hatch, and box out around chimneys and flues with the required clearance and fire-rated materials. This is the step that makes everything else work.

Step 3: Protect the vents and fixtures
Staple rafter baffles at each soffit so insulation cannot block the eave vents — you need a clear air channel from soffit to ridge. Build a dam or keep insulation 3 inches clear around any non-IC recessed lights and heat-producing devices to prevent a fire hazard. Confirm no exposed knob-and-tube wiring is present; if it is, stop and call a pro before covering it.
Step 4: Install the insulation
For batts, lay unfaced batts snugly between the joists, then a second layer perpendicular across the joists to cover the thermal bridge — no gaps, no compression, cut neatly around obstacles. For loose fill, blow it evenly to the marked depth (attach depth rulers to the joists first), working backward toward the hatch so you are never standing in fresh fill. Keep it level and at the target depth throughout.

Step 5: Finish at the hatch and verify
Insulate the back of the attic hatch and weatherstrip its edges so it seals — an uninsulated hatch is a big hole in your new blanket. Do a final walk (on the joists or boards), confirming even depth, clear baffles, and proper clearances around fixtures. Note the depth so you can confirm you hit the R-value.
Common mistakes
- Skipping air-sealing. Insulation over unsealed leaks underperforms badly. Seal first.
- Burying the soffit vents. Blocks attic airflow and invites moisture. Use baffles.
- Adding a second vapor barrier. Traps moisture. Use unfaced batts or loose fill on top.
- Covering non-IC lights or knob-and-tube wiring. A fire hazard. Keep clearances or call a pro.
- Stepping between joists. You will go through the ceiling. Stay on the joists or boards.
When to call a pro
Bring in a professional if you find knob-and-tube wiring (it must not be buried in insulation — an electrician has to address it first), active moisture, mold, or roof leaks, if the attic has no safe access or walking surface, or if you want spray foam (a professional application). Correcting wiring or moisture problems is not a DIY step to work around — fix the cause, then insulate.
