Weatherstripping a door is one of the cheapest, fastest energy fixes — plan on under an hour, $10 to $40 in materials, and no special skill. Drafts around an exterior door waste heating and cooling and let in cold, dust, and bugs. You find the gaps, pick the right stripping for each location, cut and fit it to the jamb, and add a sweep to the bottom. The one judgment call is thickness: the seal should compress lightly, not stop the door latching. There is no risk here beyond a pinched finger.

Step 1: Find the drafts and measure the gaps

Close the door and feel around it on a windy day, or use the flashlight test after dark. Measure the gap at the sides, top, and bottom so you can buy stripping rated to seal each one. Note whether the jamb has a kerf slot (a groove for barbed weatherstripping) or a flat stop face, since that decides which product fits.

Step 2: Clean the surfaces

Wipe the jamb stop and the door bottom clean and dry — adhesive-backed stripping only sticks to a clean surface, and screwed stripping seats better on a clean face. Scrape off any crumbling old weatherstripping first.

Step 3: Fit the jamb weatherstripping

Measure and cut the top piece first, then the two sides, so they meet neatly in the corners. For adhesive V-seal or foam, peel and press it onto the stop where the door face meets it, fold V-seal along its crease so it springs against the door. For kerf-in stripping, press the barbed flange into the jamb slot and seat it with a putty knife. Close the door and confirm it compresses the seal lightly and still latches.

Step 4: Install the door sweep

Measure the door width and cut the sweep to length (a hacksaw for the metal carrier, scissors for the fin). Hold it on the inside face of the door so the fin just brushes the threshold when the door is closed — enough to seal, not so much that it drags hard. Mark the screw holes, drill pilot holes, and screw it on. Adjustable sweeps let you slide it up or down before final tightening.

Step 5: Test the seal

Close the door and re-run the draft check — hand and flashlight. The gaps should be gone and the door should latch with normal effort. The dollar-bill test should now drag firmly at each edge. If the door is hard to close, back off to thinner stripping; if a draft remains, the stripping there is too thin or a corner has a gap to fill.

Consider a handyman or door specialist only if the door itself is warped, the frame is out of square so gaps vary wildly, the threshold is rotted, or the door needs replacing rather than sealing. Those are carpentry problems weatherstripping cannot fix — but sealing a sound door in a sound frame is a job anyone can do.
