Step 1: Check for a neutral and identify the circuit

With the breaker off and the cover plate removed, look for the capped white neutral bundle behind the switch. Confirm neutral or no-neutral, and count the hots: two means single-pole, three means three-way (buy the matching smart switch). Do this before purchasing so the switch fits your wiring.

Step 2: Cut the power and verify dead

Switch off the breaker for the circuit and confirm the wires are dead with the voltage tester before touching them. If you need to identify line versus load, you can do that with a tester while power is on, then kill the breaker before wiring.

Step 3: Remove the old switch and note the wires

Unscrew the old switch and pull it forward. Photograph the connections. Identify line (incoming hot), load (to the light), the neutral bundle, and the ground. Free the wires from the old switch's terminals.

Match the smart switch's leads to the house wires per its diagram: line to incoming hot, load to the fixture wire, neutral to the white bundle (add a pigtail into the bundle if needed), and the green lead to ground. Strip nicked ends to clean copper. Twist each pair clockwise, cap firmly, and tug to confirm. Fold the wires carefully into the box — smart switches are bulky and need the room.

Step 5: Mount, power, and pair

Screw the switch to the box, add the cover plate, and restore power. Open the app, put the switch in pairing mode, and connect it to your 2.4 GHz network. Confirm on/off from the app and from the physical paddle. Set up any schedules, scenes, or voice-assistant links you want. If pairing fails, the usual fix is confirming your phone is on 2.4 GHz and the switch is in pairing mode.

Most do. A smart switch stays powered around the clock to keep its Wi-Fi radio and electronics alive, and the neutral wire gives that current a return path. If your box has a neutral (a bundle of capped white wires), you have the widest choice of switches. If it does not — common in older homes — buy a smart switch specifically sold as no-neutral, which uses a different method to power itself. Check the box before you shop.

How do I know if my electrical box has a neutral wire?

Yes, but you need a smart switch designed for three-way use, usually sold with a companion or add-on switch that wires into the second location. A standard single-location smart switch will not work correctly in a three-way circuit, so confirm the model supports it before buying.
