Replacing a light switch is a 10 to 15 minute beginner job — the switch costs a few dollars, and there is no permit for a like-for-like swap. You move two hot wires and a ground from the old switch to the new one. The only non-negotiable is power: switch off the breaker and confirm the wires are dead with a tester before you touch bare copper, because the wall switch alone does not make the box safe. If you find more wires than expected, aluminum wiring, or scorching, stop and call a licensed electrician.

Tools and materials

Step 1: Cut the power and verify dead
Switch off the breaker for that circuit. Flip the wall switch on so you will notice the moment the circuit dies. Remove the cover plate and hold your voltage tester against the terminals and wires — no beep, no glow, before your fingers go near bare metal. Do not trust the wall switch alone; on some wiring it breaks the neutral and leaves the hot live.
Step 2: Remove the old switch
Unscrew the two mounting screws holding the switch to the box and pull it forward. Note the wiring: a standard single-pole has two hot wires on brass screws and a bare or green ground. Photograph it. Loosen the terminal screws (or release the back-stab wires by inserting a small screwdriver into the release slot) and free the switch.

Step 3: Prep the wires
Check the exposed copper. If a wire end is nicked, bent sharply, or was back-stabbed, snip it and re-strip about three-quarters of an inch of clean copper. Bend the last half inch into a hook with needle-nose pliers so it wraps neatly around the terminal screw. Clean, straight copper on a screw terminal is the connection that lasts.
Step 4: Connect the new switch
Hook each hot wire clockwise around a brass terminal so tightening the screw pulls the loop closed, and cinch it firmly. On a single-pole the two hots are interchangeable. Land the bare or green ground on the green grounding screw. Use the side screws, not the push-in back-stab holes — the screws are the durable connection. Confirm the little ON/OFF marking is right-side up.

Step 5: Fold, mount, and test
Fold the wires accordion-style back into the box, seat the switch, and drive the two mounting screws until the switch sits flush and level. Add the cover plate, restore the breaker, and test. Solid, immediate on-and-off with no warmth and no flicker means the job is done. If the switch feels warm in use, kill the power and redo the connections.
Common mistakes
- Trusting the wall switch instead of the breaker. Verify dead with a tester, always.
- Reusing back-stab connections. Move the wires to the screw terminals.
- Skipping the ground. Land the bare copper on the green screw.
- Installing a single-pole in a three-way circuit. Count the hots — three means three-way.
- Over-folding stiff wire until a strand cracks at the terminal. Re-strip if in doubt.
When to call an electrician
Call a pro if the box has aluminum wiring, if you see scorch marks or smell burning, if there are more wires than a simple switch should have, or if the box has no ground and you want to add one. New circuits, moving a box, and any work at the service panel are licensed-electrician and permit jobs, jurisdiction-specific — never DIY panel work. Swapping a device on sound wiring is a homeowner task.
