Most toaster ovens draw 1,200 to 1,800 watts, with compact four-slice models near 1,200 and large convection or air-fryer ovens at 1,700 to 1,800. That number is peak draw with every element energized, which happens during preheat and broiling. Once the cavity is up to temperature the thermostat cycles elements on and off, so average consumption during a bake runs roughly half to two-thirds of the rated figure. At about 17 cents per kilowatt-hour, a 10-minute use costs two to three cents and a 30-minute bake seven to ten.

Wattage tells you draw, not doneness — for that the reference is the USDA safe minimum internal temperature chart, which puts poultry at 165 degrees Fahrenheit and whole cuts of beef, pork and lamb at 145.

What wattage should you expect by size?

Wattage scales with cavity volume and with how many elements the unit carries. Air-fryer toaster ovens sit at the top because a convection fan and a high-temperature crisp mode both demand a large element.

What does it actually cost to run?

Energy is watts multiplied by hours. A 1,500-watt oven running continuously for 10 minutes consumes 0.25 kilowatt-hours; at the roughly 17 cents per kWh reported in the US Energy Information Administration's published average retail price of electricity to residential customers, that is about four cents. In practice it is less, because after preheat the elements only fire intermittently to hold temperature, so a realistic figure is two to three cents for 10 minutes and seven to ten cents for a half-hour bake.

Used daily, a toaster oven adds somewhere between 25 and 40 dollars a year to an electricity bill. Your local rate matters more than the appliance — residential prices range from under 12 cents per kWh in parts of the South to over 30 cents in Hawaii and California, so substitute the number on your own bill.

Does it really use less than the full oven?

For small jobs, decisively. A full electric oven has to bring roughly 5 cubic feet of air plus a heavy steel cavity and its insulation up to temperature, which takes 10 to 15 minutes and 2,000 to 5,000 watts. A toaster oven heats about half a cubic foot in three to five minutes. The Department of Energy has long recommended a toaster oven or countertop appliance for small items on that basis, and reheating two portions of leftovers is the clearest case: the toaster oven finishes before the range has finished preheating.

The advantage narrows as the job gets bigger. Roasting a whole chicken, baking two sheet pans, or anything that fills the large cavity is roughly a wash, and a full oven does it better. The rule of thumb is that a toaster oven wins whenever the food would occupy less than a quarter of the range oven.

Can your kitchen circuit handle it?

Do the arithmetic before assuming so. Watts divided by volts gives amps: an 1,800-watt oven on a 120-volt supply draws 15 amps, which is the entire capacity of a 15-amp branch circuit before anything else is plugged in. The National Electrical Code requires at least two 20-amp small-appliance branch circuits serving kitchen countertops in modern construction, but plenty of older homes run a single 15-amp circuit for the whole counter.

Two practical rules follow. Do not run a toaster oven simultaneously with a kettle, air fryer or coffee maker on the same circuit — those loads are all in the 1,200 to 1,500 watt range and any two of them exceed a 15-amp breaker. And plug it straight into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord or light-duty power strip, which are frequently rated below the sustained current a heating appliance pulls.
