A 5.5 to 6 quart basket is the practical minimum for a family of four, and 8 quarts or a dual-basket model is better if you cook complete meals rather than single items. Quart ratings describe basket volume, but air frying depends on food sitting in a single layer, so what matters is floor area. A 6-quart basket gives roughly 8 by 8 inches of crisper plate — four chicken breasts, or about a pound and a half of fries. Below 5 quarts you will be cooking in batches for four people almost every time.
What does each capacity actually hold?
The useful question is not how many quarts but how many portions fit in one layer without overlapping. Stacked food steams instead of crisping, so a basket that technically holds two pounds of wings only cooks one pound properly.
| Capacity | Feeds | Single-layer example |
|---|---|---|
| 2 to 3 qt | 1 person | 1 chicken breast, a handful of fries |
| 4 qt | 2 people | 2 chicken breasts, ~12 oz fries |
| 5.5 to 6 qt | 3 to 4 people | 4 chicken breasts, ~1.5 lb fries, 4 lb whole chicken |
| 8 qt | 4 to 6 people | 6 chicken thighs, 2 lb fries, 5 to 6 lb chicken |
| Dual 4 qt (8 qt total) | 4 people, two dishes | Main in one drawer, vegetable in the other |
| Oven-style, 12 to 26 qt | 4 to 6 people | Sheet pan meals, 9 x 13 pan, rotisserie |

Why do quart ratings overstate what you get?
Because they measure the whole drawer, including the vertical space above the food that you cannot fill. Manufacturers measure to the rim, and some measure the drawer rather than the perforated basket that sits inside it, which is why two 6-quart machines can differ by an inch of usable width. Air fryers cook by convection contact: hot air has to reach every surface, so a second layer of food shields the first, and the result is pale, soft undersides.
Before buying, look for the crisper plate dimensions rather than the quart figure. Eight by eight inches is roughly the point where four adult portions of a protein fit without touching. If a listing does not publish that number, the review photos of a full basket tell you more than the spec sheet does.

Basket or oven-style for a family of four?
Basket models crisp better; oven-style models hold more and are more versatile. A drawer basket is deep and narrow, so airflow around food is aggressive and fries and wings come out noticeably crunchier. An oven-style unit is wide and shallow with multiple racks, takes a quarter sheet pan, toasts, bakes and often roasts on a rotisserie spit, but the air movement is gentler and the results are closer to a convection oven than to a basket fryer.
For four people the honest split is this: if the appliance is mainly for fries, wings, nuggets and frozen foods, buy the biggest basket that fits your counter. If it is going to replace a second oven for weeknight sheet-pan meals, buy oven-style. If it is doing both, a dual-basket unit is the compromise that most families end up happiest with, because finishing two components at once is the actual bottleneck in a family meal.

Will it fit on the counter?
This is where families get caught. An 8-quart basket unit is typically around 14 to 16 inches tall, 13 to 15 inches wide and 13 to 16 inches deep, which will not clear a standard 18-inch upper cabinet gap while the lid or drawer is in use, and it needs rear clearance for the exhaust. Manufacturers generally specify at least five inches behind and above the unit so the fan is not recirculating its own hot air, and blocked vents are a leading cause of a permanently tripped thermal fuse.
Measure the cabinet gap, add the rear clearance, and only then pick a capacity. A 6-quart machine that lives on the counter gets used far more than an 8-quart that has to be lifted out of a cupboard.
Where to go next
