The short answer: disconnect the spark plug wire, tip the mower with the air filter facing up, mark and unbolt the blade, then restore the existing 30 to 45 degree bevel with a mill file or bench grinder until the edge is about as sharp as a butter knife. Balance the blade on a nail or cone balancer, grinding the heavy end until it hangs level, and reinstall it with the sharp cutting edges facing the direction of rotation, torqued to spec. The step-by-step procedure

These steps cover a walk-behind mower. Riding mowers are the same job repeated across two or three blades, but you jack the deck or drop it rather than tipping the machine.

  1. Disconnect the spark plug wire. Pull the boot straight off the plug and tuck it away from the terminal so it cannot spring back into contact. On a battery mower, remove the battery pack and the safety key. This is the step that prevents the accidental start injuries the CPSC records every season from mower blade contact.
  2. Empty or run down the fuel if the tank is more than half full, and close the fuel shutoff if the mower has one. Tipping a full mower dumps gas out of the cap vent.
  3. Tip the mower onto its side with the air filter and carburetor facing up. Tipping the other way floods the carburetor and air filter with oil, which produces a smoking, hard-starting mower and an afternoon of cleanup. If you cannot tell which side is which, look for the air filter housing and keep it skyward.
  4. Mark the blade before removing it. A dab of spray paint or a scratch on the face that points down at the grass. Reinstalling a blade upside down is common, and a mower with an upside-down blade will not cut at all while sounding perfectly normal.
  5. Jam the blade with a block of wood wedged between the blade end and the deck wall, then break the center bolt loose counterclockwise. If it will not move, soak it in penetrating oil for 15 minutes and try again with a breaker bar rather than a longer cheater on a ratchet.
  6. Clean the blade. Scrape off the packed grass and rust with a putty knife and a wire brush. You cannot see the true edge or spot a crack under a quarter inch of dried clippings.
  7. Inspect before you sharpen. Look for cracks radiating from the center hole or the sail, deep gouges, a bent end, or a cutting edge worn thin. Any of those means replace, not sharpen — see below.
  8. Clamp the blade in a vise with one cutting edge up and accessible. Loose blades slip and cut hands.
  9. Sharpen along the existing bevel. With a file, push away from you along the length of the edge at the factory angle, using the full length of the file, and only cut on the push stroke. Ten to fifteen strokes usually restores a normally dull edge. With a grinder, use light passes moving along the edge and never linger.
  10. Keep the steel cool. If the edge turns straw-colored or blue, you have drawn the temper out of it and that section will go dull within one mowing. Dip the blade in water every few passes when grinding, or just use a file, which cannot generate that heat.
  11. Match both ends. Count your strokes on the first edge and give the second the same treatment. Uneven metal removal is what creates imbalance.
  12. Balance the blade. Hang it by its center hole on a nail driven into a stud, or set it on a cone balancer. If one end dips, grind a little more off the flat back of that end — never off the cutting edge you just sharpened — until it hangs level.
  13. Reinstall with the sharp edges leading. The cutting edges must face the direction of rotation and the raised sail must point up toward the deck. Your paint mark tells you which way. Torque the bolt to the figure in your manual, commonly 35 to 60 ft-lb on walk-behinds and 45 to 70 ft-lb on riders. Guessing usually means undertightening, and a blade that works loose at 3,000 rpm is a genuine hazard.
  14. Reconnect the plug wire and start the mower on level ground, standing clear. It should sound smooth. Any new vibration means the blade is out of balance or the bolt is loose — shut it down and check.

How sharp, and at what angle?

The single most useful instruction is: do not think about the angle, follow the one that is already there. Every factory blade is ground at roughly 30 degrees, sometimes out to 45 on heavier mulching blades. Laying the file flat on the existing ground face reproduces it automatically. People who try to improve on the factory angle almost always steepen it, which feels sharper for one mow and then collapses.

The target is a butter-knife edge, not a razor. Mower steel is soft enough to take a fine edge and far too soft to keep one. Grass does not need a razor to be cut cleanly at 3,000 rpm — the speed does most of the work. A slightly heavier edge survives the pine cones, acorns, sticks and grit that a real lawn contains, which is why manufacturers grind them that way in the first place.

Sharpen only the top face of the bevel. Filing the underside creates a double bevel that changes the lift geometry and puts the edge in the wrong plane relative to the grass.

Sharpen or replace?

Sharpening restores an edge. It cannot fix a damaged blade, and a compromised blade spinning at mower speeds is the one genuinely dangerous part of the machine.

A typical steel blade takes three to five seasons of regular sharpening before it is used up. Replacement blades for common walk-behind decks are inexpensive, so the calculation almost always favors buying a new one when there is any doubt. Follow the factory bevel, which on nearly every walk-behind and riding mower blade is between 30 and 45 degrees, with most sitting close to 30. You do not need to measure it.
