For an HVLP or handheld sprayer, thin latex paint about 10 percent — roughly 1/2 cup of water per quart, or 2 cups per gallon — added in stages and stirred a full minute between additions. Airless sprayers usually need no thinning at all; if the fan shows tails, raise the pressure or fit a smaller tip before you reach for water. Oil-based paints thin with mineral spirits at 5 to 10 percent, never water. Check the paint can and the sprayer manual first, because both set limits and both override any general rule.

Percentages are by volume of the paint, so 10 percent of a gallon is 12.8 fluid ounces, near enough to 1½ cups. Measure it rather than eyeballing; the difference between 10 and 20 percent is the difference between good coverage and three coats.

Step-by-step
- Read both manuals, 5 minutes. The paint can states a maximum thinning, often 5 or 10 percent, and the sprayer manual states a target viscosity and often a recommended tip. If the two disagree, follow the more conservative one.
- Strain the paint first. Pour through a paint strainer bag or a fine mesh cone into a clean bucket. Dried skin and grit from the can rim are the leading cause of spitting and clogged tips, and straining costs a dollar and prevents an hour of frustration.
- Stir before you judge it. Paint that has sat separates and reads far thicker at the top than it is. Stir or shake for two minutes, or have the store shake it, before deciding it needs thinning at all.
- Add water in stages. For a gallon, add 1 cup, stir for a full minute, and test. Then a second cup if needed. Never dump 2 cups in at once — you cannot take it back out.
- Run the cup test. Fill the viscosity funnel that shipped with the sprayer, hold it over the bucket, and time how long the paint drains in a continuous stream. Compare against the manual, which typically wants 20 to 40 seconds. If it drains too fast, you have over-thinned.
- Test-spray on cardboard. A large flattened box, held vertically, at your working distance of 10 to 12 inches. Look for three things: an even fan with no tails at the edges, a smooth surface rather than orange-peel stipple, and no runs. Orange peel means too thick; runs and light coverage mean too thin.
- Adjust once, then commit. Fix pressure and tip size before adding more water. On an airless, tails at the fan edges usually mean pressure is too low or the tip is worn, not that the paint is thick.
- Mix the whole job at once. If you are spraying more than one bucket, thin all the paint together in a five gallon pail. Batch-to-batch differences in thinning show as visible sheen bands on a finished wall.

Tip size does what thinning is often blamed for
On an airless, tip size is the primary control and thinning is the fallback. As a working guide, a 0.011 to 0.013 inch tip suits thin materials like stain and lacquer, 0.015 to 0.017 suits most interior latex on walls, and 0.019 to 0.021 handles thick ceiling and exterior paints. A tip too small for the material forces you to over-thin; the right tip usually removes the need entirely. Mistakes that show up on the wall
- Over-thinning. Runs, sags, poor hide and a weaker film. The most common error by a distance.
- Thinning before stirring. Separated paint reads thick. Stir first, then decide.
- Not straining. Grit clogs the tip mid-wall and forces you to stop and clear it, which leaves a lap mark.
- Water in oil-based paint. It will not mix, it will curdle, and the batch is ruined. Mineral spirits for oil, water for latex.
- Thinning a self-priming or one-coat paint hard. Those products rely on film build. Thinned heavily they lose the property you paid for.
- Different ratios between buckets. Visible sheen bands. Mix the whole job together.
- Ignoring temperature. Cold paint is thicker. Bringing a bucket up to about 70°F often removes the need to thin at all.

Safety and ventilation
Spraying atomizes paint into a breathable mist, so wear a properly fitted respirator rated for paint spray rather than a dust mask, plus eye protection. When thinning oil-based products with mineral spirits, ventilate hard, keep the area free of ignition sources, and never store solvent-soaked rags balled up — spread them flat outdoors to dry or seal them in a metal container, because oil-finish rags left in a heap are a documented spontaneous combustion hazard. Airless sprayers operate at pressures high enough to inject paint through skin, which is a genuine medical emergency, so keep the trigger lock on when not spraying and never point the gun at anyone or attempt to clear a tip with the gun pressurized.
