The short answer: a moderately damp basement up to 1,500 square feet is served by a 20 to 30 pint unit on today labeling, a typical damp 1,000 to 2,000 square foot basement wants 35 to 50 pints, and a genuinely wet basement with seepage at 2,000 square feet or more needs 50 to 70 pints or a ducted whole-basement unit. What does the AHAM sizing chart say?
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers publishes a sizing chart that crosses floor area with four dampness classes, and it is still the most useful starting point in the industry. The classes are defined by what you can observe: moderately damp means a musty smell in humid weather; very damp means damp spots on walls or floor; wet means visible seepage and sweating surfaces; extremely wet means standing water. Identify the class honestly, because people systematically underestimate it and then wonder why the machine never catches up.

Read the result, then round up to the nearest size actually sold — 20, 30, 35, 50 and 70 pints are the common classes. Rounding up costs a few dollars a month in electricity at worst and buys you a machine that reaches setpoint and cycles off, which is both quieter and easier on the compressor.

Why do the pint numbers not match older advice?
Because the test standard changed. Until 2019, the Department of Energy rated dehumidifier capacity at 80°F and 60 percent relative humidity. The current federal test uses 65°F and 60 percent, which is far closer to real basement conditions but yields a smaller number, because cooler air simply holds less water to remove. The same physical machine that was marketed as 70-pint before the change is typically labeled 50-pint now. This single fact explains most of the confusion in online sizing advice, where pre-2019 and post-2019 figures are quoted side by side as if comparable.

What raises the moisture load beyond square footage?
Several things, and each can move you a full class up the chart. Exposed soil in a crawlspace open to the basement can release several gallons a day. A bare concrete slab without a vapor barrier passes moisture continuously by diffusion. Unsealed rim joists let humid summer air pour into a cool space where it condenses. A laundry, an unvented dryer, a bathroom without an exhaust fan, or a sump pit without a lid all add measurable water. So does the number of people using the space.
Fixing the source is always cheaper than running a bigger machine forever. Sealing a crawlspace floor and insulating the rim joists commonly drops a basement from wet to moderately damp, which halves the capacity you need and cuts the running cost — the cost math is in do dehumidifiers use a lot of electricity. Does basement temperature change the choice?
It can change the technology, not just the size. A standard compressor dehumidifier loses capacity as air cools and starts icing its coil below roughly 60°F, which is common in an unheated basement or an attached garage in shoulder season. Units with an automatic defrost cycle cope down to about 41°F but at reduced output, so effective capacity is well below the label.
