The short answer: a ceiling fan lasts about 10 years on average. A well-built fan with a quality AC motor commonly runs 15 to 20 years, while budget fans under about $80 typically fail at 5 to 8 years. DC-motor fans are newer to the mass market, but their electronics — the driver board and remote receiver — are the usual failure point rather than the motor. Blades, downrods and mounting hardware effectively never wear out; motors, capacitors, pull chains and integrated LED light kits do.

How long does each type last?
Build quality separates the outcomes far more than brand or price alone. The single strongest predictor across owner reports is motor construction: a sealed, permanently lubricated motor with a heavy die-cast housing outlasts a lightweight stamped-steel motor by a wide margin, and cheap fans use the latter because it is what keeps the price down. Environment is the second factor — humidity and heat shorten every number below.

What are the signs a ceiling fan is failing?
A fan usually announces the end well before it stops. The pattern that matters is a motor that hums audibly but starts slowly, or will not start at all until you nudge a blade — that is a failing start capacitor or a seizing bearing. A capacitor is a five-dollar part and a reasonable repair; a seizing bearing is not. Grinding or rhythmic scraping from the motor housing is the same message, more urgent.
- Only some speeds work. Almost always the capacitor or the pull-chain switch, both cheap and replaceable.
- Slow start, audible hum. Capacitor first; if a new one does not fix it, the motor is going.
- Grinding or scraping. Bearings. Replace the fan.

- Burning smell, or the motor housing hot to the touch. Cut power at the breaker immediately and do not run it again.

What makes a ceiling fan last longer?
Keep it clean, keep it tight, and keep it out of moisture. Dust is the quiet killer — it loads the blades unevenly, which introduces vibration, and vibration is what loosens hardware and wears bearings over years. A wipe every couple of months and an annual check of the mounting bracket, downrod set screws and blade-arm screws is the whole maintenance program for a modern fan.
Installation matters just as much. A fan hung from a box that is not listed for fan support flexes with every rotation, and that flex works its way through the entire assembly. When should I replace rather than repair?
Replace when the motor is the problem, when the fan is undersized for the room, or when it is more than about 15 years old and needing a second repair.
