The short answer: a wobbling ceiling fan is almost always loose mounting hardware or unequal blade height — not a fan about to fall. Work through it in this order: cut power and tighten the four sets of screws (ceiling bracket, downrod set screws, canopy, blade arms), clean the blades, then measure each blade tip to the ceiling and correct anything more than 1/8 inch out. How do I check blade height?

Hold a tape measure or a yardstick against the ceiling and measure down to the tip of one blade. Rotate the fan by hand and measure each blade at the same point on the ceiling — that consistency is the whole point of the test. Any blade more than 1/8 inch off the others is your wobble. On most fans you can correct it by loosening the blade-arm screws at the motor and gently flexing the arm up or down before retightening.

If a blade is bowed rather than sitting low, it is warped. Blades on porches, in bathrooms and above kitchens absorb moisture unevenly and distort over a few seasons. A warped blade cannot be adjusted back — replace the full set rather than one blade, because a mismatched replacement changes weight and pitch and often makes the wobble worse.

How does the balancing kit work?

The kit is a plastic clip and a strip of small adhesive weights. Clip the plastic weight to the midpoint of one blade, run the fan on high, and note whether the wobble improves or worsens. Move the clip blade to blade until you find the one where it helps, then slide the clip along that blade to find the position with the least movement. Stick an adhesive weight on the top of the blade at that spot and remove the clip.

When is the ceiling box the real problem?

When there is movement in the canopy rather than the blades. Push up firmly on the canopy with the power off: any give means the bracket or the box is loose, and that is the one failure mode that genuinely leads to fans coming down. The National Electrical Code requires a ceiling fan to hang from an outlet box listed for fan support, secured directly to framing or to a listed expandable brace. A standard plastic lighting box is not rated for it, and swapping a light for a fan without swapping the box is a frequent DIY error.

Is a wobbling ceiling fan dangerous?

A small wobble is not, but it should still be corrected. Fans do not fall because they wobble — they fall because the outlet box was never rated for a fan, which is a separate problem the wobble may be revealing. Any box supporting a ceiling fan must be listed for fan support and secured to framing or a listed brace, per the National Electrical Code. If yours is a plain plastic lighting box, stop running the fan and replace the box before doing anything else.

How much wobble is normal?

A quarter inch or less of visible movement at the blade tips on high speed is within the range most manufacturers consider acceptable. It is very difficult to build a fan with literally zero movement. What is not normal is a wobble you can see from across the room, a wobble that grew worse over weeks, a wobble accompanied by a knocking sound, or any movement in the canopy or downrod itself rather than the blades.

Do I need a balancing kit?

Only after the mechanical checks. Most wobble is loose hardware or unequal blade height, and a balancing kit will not fix either — it will just mask it temporarily. Kits are cheap and every fan ships with one, so use it once the screws are tight and the blade heights match within an eighth of an inch. Why did my fan start wobbling all of a sudden?

Sudden onset usually means something moved. The most common causes are a mounting screw that backed out under vibration, a blade arm that loosened, a warped blade after a humid summer in a bathroom or porch, or a downrod ball that shifted out of its seat in the hanger bracket during cleaning. Can dust cause a ceiling fan to wobble?

Yes, and it is the easiest fix on the list. Dust accumulates unevenly — heavier on the leading edge and on whichever side faces a doorway or a kitchen — and enough of it puts a blade meaningfully out of balance. Wipe the top and bottom of every blade with a damp cloth before diagnosing anything else.
