Installing a ceiling fan is an intermediate DIY job — plan on 1 to 2 hours, $80 to $300 for the fan, and no permit for a like-for-like swap. The wiring is a standard hot-neutral-ground connection; the safety-critical step is the box. A fan needs a fan-rated, joist-braced box, never a standard light box. Step 1: Cut the power and verify dead

Switch off the breaker for the circuit, leave the wall switch on, and after removing the old fixture confirm the wires are dead with the voltage tester. You will be working overhead with both hands, so certainty here matters.

Step 2: Install the fan-rated box

Remove the old box and install a fan-rated one. If you have attic access, screw a fan box directly to the side of a joist. If not, feed an expanding brace bar up through the hole and ratchet it tight between the joists, then hang the fan-rated box from it. This braced, rated box is what makes the whole install safe — do not skip it or reuse a standard box.

Step 3: Mount the bracket and hang the motor

Screw the fan's mounting bracket to the fan-rated box. Assemble the downrod and feed the fan's wires up through it, sizing the downrod so the blades will sit 8 to 9 feet off the floor. Hang the motor housing on the bracket's hook (most brackets have one) so your hands are free to wire.

Step 4: Wire the fan

Connect the wires: black (fan motor) to black (ceiling) for the fan, the blue wire (light kit, if any) to the second hot or to black per your switch setup, white to white for neutral, and the green or bare ground to the ceiling ground and the bracket. Twist each pair clockwise, cap firmly, and tug to confirm. Tuck the connections into the box and seat the canopy over the bracket.

Step 5: Attach blades, balance, and test

Screw each blade to its bracket and each bracket to the motor, keeping every screw tight. Install the light kit and bulbs if included. Restore power and test all speeds. If it wobbles, confirm all screws are tight, measure each blade tip's distance to the ceiling (they should match), then use the balancing kit to weight the heavy blade until it runs still.

Bring in a licensed electrician if there is no box or circuit where you want the fan, if you cannot access the framing to brace the box, if the wiring is aluminum or cloth-insulated, or if the work reaches the panel — permit-and-pro territory, jurisdiction-specific, never DIY at the service panel. Can I install a ceiling fan where a light fixture was?

Yes, but you must replace the electrical box with a fan-rated one first. A standard light box is only rated for a static 50-pound fixture; a spinning fan puts dynamic load on the box that a normal box cannot handle, and it will loosen and drop over time. A fan-rated box is bolted or braced to a joist and stamped as fan-rated. Never hang a fan from a standard light box — this is the single most important safety step.

What is a fan-rated box and why do I need one?

A fan-rated (fan-support) box is built to carry both the weight and the constant vibration of a ceiling fan. It either screws directly to a joist or mounts on an expanding brace bar that spans between two joists above the ceiling. It is labeled as rated for ceiling-fan support, typically up to 70 pounds. A regular box relies on two small screws into the box ears and is not designed for a moving load — using one is how fans fall.

How much clearance does a ceiling fan need?

Keep the blades at least 7 feet above the floor, at least 18 inches from any wall (24 inches is better), and 8 to 10 inches below the ceiling for good airflow. On ceilings over 9 feet, add a downrod to drop the fan into that 8-to-9-foot range. On a low ceiling under 8 feet, use a low-profile hugger fan that mounts flush. Blades too close to the ceiling move far less air.

Why does my ceiling fan wobble?

Wobble comes from imbalance or a loose mount, not usually from the fan being defective. First confirm every mounting screw and blade screw is tight and the box is solid. Then check the blades are all the same distance from the ceiling (measure each blade tip) — a bent bracket throws one off. Finally, use the balancing kit that ships with most fans: a clip and stick-on weights that let you find and correct the heavy blade. A balanced, tight fan runs still.

Do I need an electrician to install a ceiling fan?

For a swap where wiring and a switch already exist, a confident DIYer can do it — the wiring is a standard hot-neutral-ground connection, and the box upgrade is the main task.
