Cleaning a furnace flame sensor is a quick, cheap fix for the common light-then-shut-off problem — plan on about 20 minutes and no cost. When a furnace fires for a few seconds then quits and retries, a flame sensor coated in oxidation usually cannot detect the flame, so the board shuts the gas off. You turn off the power and gas, pull the one-screw sensor, scuff the rod clean, and reinstall it. The safety rules are firm: cut electrical power and gas first, and if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed HVAC tech.

Tools and materials
- Fine abrasive — 400-grit sandpaper, emery cloth, fine steel wool, or a synthetic scouring pad.
- A 1/4-inch nut driver or the screwdriver that fits the sensor's mounting screw.
- A clean dry cloth or paper towel to wipe the rod after scuffing.
- A flashlight to see inside the burner compartment.
- A replacement flame sensor on hand is smart if yours is old — they are a few dollars and model-specific.

Step 1: Turn off power and gas
Switch off the furnace at its dedicated power switch (usually on or near the unit) or its breaker, and shut off the gas supply valve to the furnace. Both, before you open anything. This is a gas appliance — working on it live is not worth the risk. If you smell gas at any point, leave and call your gas utility.
Step 2: Open the furnace and find the sensor
Remove the furnace access panel (usually lifts off or slides up). Locate the flame sensor: a single metal rod with a porcelain base and one wire, mounted at the burner assembly opposite the igniter, positioned in the flame path. Do not confuse it with the ceramic igniter. Let the furnace cool if it was recently running.

Step 3: Remove the sensor
Remove the single screw holding the sensor to the burner assembly and gently withdraw the rod. Slide the wire connector off its spade terminal (a light pull, not a yank) so you can handle the sensor freely. Note its orientation for reinstallation.
Step 4: Scuff the rod clean
Lightly scuff the metal rod with the fine abrasive until the dull oxidation film is gone and the metal looks clean — you are polishing off a coating, not removing material, so a gentle pass all around the rod is enough. Wipe it with a clean dry cloth to remove any grit or residue. Do not touch the cleaned rod with greasy fingers; handle it by the porcelain base.

Step 5: Reinstall, restore, and test
Slide the sensor back into place in its original orientation, drive the screw, and push the wire connector firmly back onto the terminal. Replace the access panel. Turn the gas back on, restore power, and run a heat cycle: the burners should light and stay lit through a full cycle now. If it still short cycles, the sensor may be worn out (replace it) or the problem lies elsewhere.
Common mistakes
- Not shutting off power and gas. Both must be off before you open the furnace.
- Confusing the sensor with the igniter. The sensor is a plain metal rod; the igniter is ceramic.
- Using coarse abrasive. Scratches the rod. Use fine grit and a light touch.
- Leaving grit or oily fingerprints on the rod. Wipe it clean; handle by the base.
- Repeatedly cleaning a worn-out sensor. If it fouls every few weeks, replace it.
When to call an HVAC technician
Cleaning the sensor is DIY, but call a licensed HVAC tech if you smell gas, if the furnace still short cycles after a clean or new sensor (the igniter, gas valve, or control board may be at fault), if the flame is yellow or sooty rather than blue, or if there is any sign of a cracked heat exchanger. Gas-valve, heat-exchanger, and combustion problems are professional, safety-critical work — never DIY.
