What air plants actually are

Air plants belong to the genus Tillandsia, a group of over 600 species in the bromeliad family. In the wild they grow clinging to tree branches, rock faces, and even power lines across the Americas, from the southern United States to Argentina. They are epiphytes, meaning they perch on other surfaces without stealing nutrients from them, and they gather water and food through specialized scales on their leaves called trichomes. Watering: the weekly soak

Soaking, not misting, is the primary way to water air plants. Misting alone rarely delivers enough water to hydrate the plant fully, and it is easy to over-rely on it and slowly starve the plant of moisture.

  1. Submerge in room-temperature water. Fill a bowl or sink and dunk the whole plant. Use rainwater, aquarium water, or tap water left out overnight to off-gas chlorine.
  2. Soak 20 to 30 minutes. A thirsty plant with curled leaves can take a longer soak, up to an hour, to rehydrate.
  3. Shake off the excess. Turn the plant upside down and shake firmly to fling water out of the leaf bases and central cup. This is the make-or-break step.
  4. Dry upside down within 3 to 4 hours. Set the plant on a towel or in a colander, base up, in a spot with good airflow until fully dry, then return it to its display.

The drying step that prevents rot

If there is one thing to get right, it is drying. Air plants funnel water toward their center, and a plant left wet at the base — especially one displayed upright in a globe or shell — develops a black, mushy core within days. By the time you notice, the rot has usually reached the growing point and the plant cannot be saved; a healthy air plant should never lose leaves to a gentle tug.

After every soak, shake vigorously and let the plant dry base-up in bright, airy conditions. It should be fully dry within about 4 hours. Bright, indirect light is ideal. A spot within a few feet of an east, west, or lightly shaded south window suits most species. Direct, unfiltered midday sun through glass will bleach and scorch the leaves, while a dim corner leaves the plant unable to sustain itself and slowly fading.

The silvery, fuzzy species tolerate brighter light because their dense trichomes reflect and protect them, while the greener, smoother species prefer more shade and more frequent watering.
