Installing a smart thermostat is a beginner-friendly job most homeowners finish in 45 minutes to an hour, with a screwdriver and a phone. On a standard low-voltage system it costs nothing beyond the thermostat itself ($90 to $250). The whole thing runs on 24 volts, so the shock risk is low once you flip the furnace breaker off. The one real gotcha is the C-wire that supplies constant power. If your heat is electric baseboard or line-voltage radiant, stop: that is 120/240-volt work for a licensed electrician, not a DIY swap.
Before you start: check compatibility
Pull your old thermostat off its wall plate and photograph the wiring. Note the letter printed at each screw terminal (R or Rc/Rh, W, Y, G, and C if present). Run those letters through the manufacturer's online compatibility checker. The three configurations that cause trouble are a system with no C-wire, a heat pump (you will see an O or B terminal for the reversing valve), and a multi-stage system (W2, Y2). Step-by-step installation
- Kill the power. Turn off the furnace or air handler at the breaker panel, not just the thermostat. Verify it is dead by bumping the temperature on the old unit and confirming the system does not respond.
- Label the wires. The new thermostat ships with letter stickers. Wrap one on each wire matching its terminal letter before you loosen a single screw. This is the step that prevents a miswire later.
- Remove the old thermostat. Pull the face off, unscrew the wires, and take the old wall plate down. Do not let the wire bundle fall back into the wall — clip it with a clothespin or bend it over.
- Handle the C-wire. If you have a C-wire, land it. If you do not, install the included power extender kit at the furnace control board per the app, or use an add-a-wire adapter. This is where most installs succeed or stall.
- Mount the new base. Level it, mark the holes, drill 1/4-inch pilot holes, and use the drywall anchors provided. Feed the wires through the center opening.
- Connect the wires. Match each labeled wire to its lettered terminal and seat it fully. Give each a gentle tug to confirm it is clamped.
- Snap on the display and restore power. Flip the breaker back on. The thermostat should boot within a minute.
- Run guided setup. In the app, select your exact system type (conventional gas, heat pump, dual-fuel) so the software drives the right terminals. Connect to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, test a heat and a cool call, and confirm the system fires.

Mistakes that cause a dead screen
- Skipping the C-wire question. No constant power means a blank or rebooting display. Solve it before mounting, not after.

- Connecting to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Most thermostats only join a 2.4 GHz band. If setup fails at the network step, this is usually why.
- Leaving the furnace door ajar. The door safety switch cuts the whole 24-volt circuit; the thermostat stays dark until it is closed.
When to call a pro
Stop and hire a licensed HVAC tech or electrician if your heat is electric baseboard, radiant, or any line-voltage system (120/240 volts), if you have a proprietary communicating system, or if you find scorched or brittle wiring at the furnace.
