Every sprinkler head has two separate adjustments — arc (how far around it sweeps) and radius (how far it throws) — and the way you reach them depends entirely on the head family. Gear-drive rotors like the Hunter PGP and Rain Bird 5000 have a fixed left stop, an adjustable right stop reached through a socket on top, and a radius reduction screw beside the nozzle. Fixed spray bodies have no adjustment in the body at all; everything happens at the nozzle. Get the right key first, because the sockets are brand-specific and a flat screwdriver will round out a Hunter arc drive on the first try.
First, identify what you actually have
Walk the zone with the water off and pull each riser up by hand. Three families cover almost every residential yard in the United States, and they behave completely differently.

Two things follow from this table. First, you cannot fix a fixed-pattern spray nozzle by adjusting it — a quarter-circle nozzle is a quarter circle forever, and the fix is a different nozzle. Second, never mix rotors and spray heads on the same zone: sprays put down water two to four times faster than rotors, so any run time that suits one drowns or starves the other. That is a plumbing problem, not an adjustment problem.

Hunter PGP and PGP-ADJ rotors
The PGP is the most-installed residential rotor in the country and the one most people are standing over when they search this question. It has a fixed left stop: the pattern always begins at the left edge and opens clockwise from there.
- Set where the pattern starts. With the zone off, pull the riser up and rotate the turret counterclockwise until it stops — that is the fixed left edge. Keeping it at the stop, rotate the whole turret so that edge points at the left-hand boundary of the area you want covered.
- Set the arc. Insert the plastic square end of the Hunter key into the arc adjustment socket on top of the turret. It is marked with arrows: turning toward + opens the arc, toward − closes it. The PGP-ADJ covers 40° to 360°, and roughly four full turns of the key move the right stop about 90°. Turn it while the zone runs and you can watch the right stop walk around.
- Set the radius. The radius reduction screw is the small screw beside the nozzle socket. Drive it with the 3/32 in. steel hex end of the Hunter key. Clockwise shortens the throw — the screw pushes a pin into the stream and breaks it up. Hunter documents a maximum useful reduction of about 25 percent, and explicitly warns that going more than five full turns can eject the retention screw from the head.
If you need more than a quarter off the distance, change the nozzle instead. PGP rotors take an interchangeable nozzle set, and stepping down a nozzle number cuts both distance and flow, which is what you actually want. Hunter's own residential rotor adjustment instructions spell out the same sequence.
Rain Bird 5000 rotors
Same architecture, different tool. The 5000 also has a fixed left stop and is factory set to 180°, adjustable from 40° to 360° on part-circle units.
- Pull the turret up with the hooked end of the Rain Bird rotor tool. Do not lever it up with a screwdriver — that tears the wiper seal, and a leaking seal is the number one reason a 5000 later floods its own head.
- Rotate the turret counterclockwise to the left trip point, then turn the whole turret so that trip point aims at the left boundary of the area.
- Adjust the arc with the flat blade in the arc socket, again marked + and −. Rain Bird states arc adjustment can be done with the sprinkler running or dry, and needs only a flat blade — which is why 5000s in older yards are usually the ones that have been adjusted, correctly or otherwise.
- Adjust the radius with the same blade on the radius reduction screw above the nozzle. Again about 25 percent is the working limit before the stream starts to atomize rather than shorten.
Rain Bird publishes the full sequence and the nozzle chart on its 5000 Series support page, and the 5000 rotor technical specification lists the radius and flow for every nozzle in the tree. If the throw is badly wrong, that chart is a faster fix than the screw.
Fixed spray bodies and their nozzles
Spray heads confuse people because the body does nothing. A Rain Bird 1804 or Hunter Pro-Spray body is just a pop-up riser with a threaded socket; the pattern, the arc and the radius all live in the nozzle screwed into it.
- Variable arc nozzles (VAN) are the adjustable kind. Hold the base of the nozzle and rotate the outer collar: opening the collar widens the arc, closing it narrows it, typically across 0° to 360°. This is done by hand, wet or dry, in about five seconds.
- Fixed pattern nozzles are stamped Q, T, H or F — quarter, third, half and full circle. There is no arc adjustment. If a quarter nozzle is watering three-quarters of what you need, unscrew it and fit a half.
- Radius on both types is the small slotted screw in the middle of the nozzle face. Clockwise shortens, up to roughly a quarter of the throw.
- Aiming is done by turning the nozzle, or by pulling the riser and rotating it in the body.
One caution that matters more than it sounds: matched precipitation rate (MPR) nozzles are engineered so a quarter, a half and a full circle all put down water at the same depth per hour despite covering different areas. Mixing MPR and non-MPR nozzles on one zone reintroduces exactly the uneven watering you were trying to fix.

Heads that are sunk, tilted or blocked
A large share of "my sprinkler needs adjusting" problems are not adjustment problems at all. Before you touch a key, check three things.
Grade. A pop-up body should sit flush with the soil, with the top of the cap level with the surrounding grass. Thatch and topdressing raise the lawn a little every year, and a head that ends up half an inch low sprays into the turf right in front of it. Riser extensions and a few minutes with a spade fix this permanently.
Tilt. Heads knocked sideways by a mower wheel throw high on one side and short on the other. Dig back the soil, straighten the body against the riser, backfill and tamp.
Obstruction. A rotor throwing 30 feet cannot see through a shrub. Either move the head to the front of the planting or accept the shadow and add a head. Grass that stays brown in exactly the same patch every summer is nearly always a coverage shadow, not a soil problem.
Set the overlap, not the individual head
The single most useful thing to know about sprinkler layout is that heads are designed for head-to-head coverage: each head should throw far enough to reach the base of the next one. That sounds like massive overwatering, and it is not, because a rotating stream deposits far more water close to the head than at the edge of its throw. Overlapping the weak outer edges is what produces an even depth across the lawn.
So adjust radius toward the neighbor rather than toward the grass. If a head is cranked short enough that its stream dies halfway to the next one, you get a dry ring that no run time will cure. Verify it the only way that actually works — set half a dozen straight-sided cans across the zone, run it 15 minutes, and compare the depths. The four mistakes that break heads
Forcing the turret past its stops. Gear-drive rotors have a mechanical stop at the left edge. Muscling past it strips the gear train, and a stripped rotor is a replacement, not a repair.
A flat screwdriver in a Hunter arc socket. The socket is square. One firm turn with a blade rounds it, and after that no key will grip.
Winding the radius screw to the bottom. Past about a quarter reduction the head stops throwing shorter and starts producing drifting mist — you lose water and still have a dry spot.
Adjusting instead of unclogging. A head that suddenly throws short usually has grit in the nozzle or a filter screen full of pipe scale, not a wandering adjustment. Pull the nozzle, rinse the screen, refit.

The tools worth owning

Why buy it: the pull-up hook is the part that matters — trying to lift a wet 5000 turret with your fingers is how the seal gets torn.

Best for yards where a previous owner mixed brands
- One Hunter arc key and one Rain Bird rotor tool
- Covers the two head families found in most US yards
- Both tools are the manufacturer pattern, not a generic copy
- Cheap enough to keep a set in the garage and one in the truck
Why buy it: most established yards have had two or three repairs done by two or three people, so the heads are rarely all one brand.
After you adjust, re-check the run time
Changing arcs and radii changes how much water lands per minute, so the schedule that was right last week is not right now. Most lawns want roughly 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week including rainfall, delivered in one or two deep soakings rather than a daily sprinkle — EPA WaterSense puts the baseline at about one inch a week including rainfall, and Clemson's extension service advises never watering established turf daily outside establishment.
