The short answer: five to ten years for a compressor dehumidifier in normal home use, and realistically three to five years for one running most of the year in a wet basement. Manufacturer warranties tell the same story — one year on parts and labor is standard, with five years on the sealed refrigerant system on better models. Duty cycle is the dominant variable: a unit that runs 3,000 hours a year ages roughly three times faster than one used for a humid month each summer. Maintenance shifts the range substantially.

What lifespan should I actually expect?
Match the expectation to the duty. A portable unit run seasonally in a bedroom during a humid few weeks may well pass ten years, because it accumulates only a few hundred compressor hours. The same unit in a Midwest basement running from May to October at a 50 percent setpoint accumulates 2,500 to 3,500 hours annually and commonly fails between years three and five. Whole-house and crawlspace dehumidifiers are built to a heavier standard, with larger compressors and better coils, and eight to twelve years is normal for them at similar runtime.

What fails first?
Not usually the compressor. The most common early failures reported by owners are the fan motor and the control board, followed by the humidistat sensor drifting so far out of calibration that the unit either never shuts off or never starts. Bucket float switches stick and convince a working machine that it is full. On the sealed side, slow refrigerant leaks at brazed joints show up as a unit that runs constantly and produces steadily less water. Corrosion at the evaporator fins is the long-term killer in coastal and salted-road regions.
The tell that separates these matters: if the compressor is audibly running and the coil is cold but the bucket stays dry, you have an airflow or defrost problem. What actually extends the life?
Three habits, in order of effect. Clean the intake filter monthly during the season and the coil at least annually, because restricted airflow makes the compressor work against a hotter condenser and drives the evaporator toward icing. Set the humidistat to 50 percent rather than 40, so the machine spends time cycled off instead of chasing a target it can barely hold. And keep it off cold floors below about 60°F unless it is a desiccant model — the coil ices, the defrost cycle runs continuously, and neither the compressor nor the reversing components enjoy it.

When is it time to replace rather than repair?
Use the sealed system as the dividing line. Anything outside it — filter, fan, float switch, drain hose, control board, humidistat — is generally worth repairing on a unit under six or seven years old, and parts are widely available. Anything inside it, meaning the compressor, the refrigerant charge or a leaking coil, is effectively terminal on a consumer machine, because the labor and recovery cost approaches or exceeds a new unit.
