The Two Systems, Honestly Compared
Almost every residential outdoor light falls into one of two camps, and picking the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category.
Solar is self-contained: a small photovoltaic panel on top, a rechargeable cell inside, an LED and a dusk sensor. Nothing to wire, nothing to trench, nothing on the electric bill. You push a stake into the ground and walk away. The trade-offs are real, though: output is modest, runtime collapses in winter, shade kills performance, and the battery is a consumable that fades after roughly two seasons of nightly cycling. Solar is superb for bed edges, driveway markers and atmosphere — and disappointing when asked to light a task.
Low-voltage runs at 12 volts from a transformer plugged into a GFCI outlet. It is genuinely brighter, entirely predictable in January, and quality brass and copper fixtures last decades. The cost is the install: burying cable, sizing a transformer with headroom, and understanding voltage drop across a long run. It is still very much a DIY job — 12V will not hurt you — but it is a weekend rather than an hour.

How Bright, and What Color
Two numbers decide whether a yard looks welcoming or interrogated. Lumens measure output: a solar path light typically produces 5 to 20 lumens, a low-voltage path light 60 to 200, and a spotlight aimed up a mature tree wants 200 to 400. More is not better — over-lit paths flatten a garden and destroy night vision as you walk between pools of light.
Color temperature matters even more. Warm white at 2700K to 3000K flatters brick, timber, foliage and skin. Cool white at 5000K to 6000K reads clinical outdoors, turns green leaves grey-blue, and is the single fastest way to make a nice yard look institutional. The Four Lighting Moves
Professional landscape lighting is mostly four techniques used sparingly. Uplighting places a spot at the base of a tree, wall or specimen shrub and aims up, which is the most dramatic and the most overused. Downlighting mounts a fixture high in a tree or under an eave and casts a soft, moonlit pool — the most natural-looking effect there is. Path lighting throws a small circle at ground level to show where to walk. Silhouetting puts the light behind an object and lets its shape read as a shadow against a wall.

Spacing, Cable and Transformers
Path lights want six to eight feet of spacing, staggered rather than paired, with a fixture marking each end of a curve. For a wired system, add up the wattage of every fixture and size the transformer at roughly 1.5 times that total so you have headroom to add more later. Long runs need attention to voltage drop — a 100-foot run of thin cable can arrive at the last fixture noticeably dimmer than the first, which is why hub-and-spoke wiring beats one long daisy chain. Why Outdoor Lights Fail — and What Lasts
The honest weakness of budget solar lighting is that a lot of it is disposable. Reading across thousands of owner reviews, five failure modes dominate: the rechargeable cell losing capacity after two winters, the plastic panel cover clouding with UV so charging drops off, water ingress through a poorly sealed seam, the dusk sensor sticking, and the stake snapping when someone steps on it. Four of those five are cheap to prevent or fix — replace the cell, wipe the panel, buy glass rather than plastic housings, and site fixtures out of the mowing line.

What Is Actually Worth Lighting
Before buying anything, walk the yard after dark and note where you genuinely need light rather than where light would look nice. The list is usually shorter than expected, and it falls into three tiers.
Safety first. Any change in level — steps, a curb, a threshold, the edge of a deck — deserves real, reliable light, and that means wired. So does the walk from where you park to where you unlock a door, and the path to a trash enclosure or a side gate you use in winter. These are the places where a solar light that has quietly failed becomes a trip hazard rather than an inconvenience.
Wayfinding second. Path lights along a walkway, a driveway edge or a gravel path do not need to illuminate the ground so much as mark the route. This is where solar earns its keep: modest output is not a defect when the job is to say the path bends here.
Atmosphere last. The uplit tree, the washed stone wall, the lantern on the porch column. These are the fixtures that make a yard look considered rather than merely lit, and they are also the ones people buy first and then wonder why the yard feels harsh. Do them after the first two tiers, keep them warm, and keep them few.

Light the Yard, Not the Neighborhood
One more consideration that costs nothing and improves results: shield your fixtures and aim them down.
